This is the opportunity Youngstars Foundation, partnering with the World Economic Forum – Young Global Leaders (YGLs) in Nigeria is giving youths by producing a short film documentary featuring Alh. Aliko Dangote titled “I Believe”.

The objective of the film documentary is to spark among youths in Nigeria and Africa the consciousness that we can transform Africa for good in one generation through entrepreneurship and self belief, using Alh. Aliko Dangote’s story  as a model of mass inspiration and reorientation among emerging young entrepreneurs.

Special Highlight:

Two Nigerian youths, one male and one female shall get the chance to be part of the documentary recording with Alh. Aliko Dangote. to be one of those 2 lucky youths, you have to answer the question below.

Quiz Modality:

• Only One Answer to the quiz question is allowed, those who send more than one answer shall be disqualified.

Young and Emerging Leaders are called upon to participate in the NETAD Young and Emerging Leaders Summit.

 The summit, organised by Network for Talent Discovery (NETAD)- an organisation committed to talent discovery and development, leadership development and fostering patriotism among teenagers and youths in the African continent - is meant  to engage young and emerging leaders in leadership deliberations towards exploring strategies and concepts of leadership through participation, and  fostering active youth participation in decision making processes, thereby aiding quality governance.

In a release signed by the Executive Coordinator of the organisation, Aanu Damola Morenikeji, it was learnt that the summit, which has the theme 'Building Tomorrow Today' is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 21st June, 2012 at the Aduke Maina Hall of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State (Nigeria), commencing at 10am prompt.

A keynote address titled 'Youth participation in qualitative governance; mirage or reality?’ will be presented by Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun (First Lady, Ogun State). Other facilitators at the summit include Kingsley N.T. The ‘Organising for Change’ Training is an annual training established by ActionAid Activista Nigeria to build a core of young people who are able to inspire, lead and mobilize other young people to take action towards ending poverty in Nigeria and contributing  significantly to the eradication of poverty in the world.
Activista Nigeria recognises the potential in creating change through a combination of the right skills, consciousnesses and creative energy of young people. It seeks to harness this by broadening the skills base for organising, a rights consciousness imbedded in ActionAid’s Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) to work and a practical approach to coalescing pockets of youth engagement into a broad platform for taking action.

Activista Nigeria sees a great potential in training a higher number of young activists from  ActionAid Local Rights constituency and young people from surrounding movements, social struggles and other environments such as universities or other forums with a potential for mobilising young people through training and education.

This is to facilitate a fusion of methods that embraces ActionAid’s methodologies such as REFLECT inspired by the Paolo Freire philosophy, popular traditional organising and emerging trends inspired by the new dynamic social media platform.

The Activista Nigeria training aligns in a context specific perspective to the Global Change educational approaches and overall strategy of ActionAid.

Purpose of the Training
• Strengthen the work for social change already being carried out by the participants  and their organisations, creating experienced, enthusiastic and confident drivers of
change.
• To build up skills in organising, analysing and communicating to carry out large scale and local campaigns for social change.

Methods
• Public Action Learning & co-creation
• Tools based training
• Combination of lectures, reading, peer to peer and work groups

Eligibility:
• Activista is a youth based organising platform, to be eligible for this training you must be between ages of 16-30
• You must be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
• You must have a local group where you can apply the skills you will learn or be prepared to organise an Activista group in your locality
• You must have good presentation skills and should be able to communicate in the local language of the location where you are based.
• Only Nigerian based applicants are eligible to apply.

NOTE: The training will take place in Nigeria and ActionAid Nigeria will be responsible for transport, accommodation and feeding of selected applicants throughout the training.

Celebrating the African Amazon: Essays in Honour of Professor Theodora Akachi Ezeigbo.

Teacher, theorist, critic, novelist, playwright, children literature author, short story writer, journalist and poet, Professor Theodora Akachi Ezeigbo, has had an eventful and well-decorated career at the University of Lagos spanning over three decades. During this period, Professor Ezeigbo made a name for herself as a competent teacher and novelist-scholar by formulating the influential “snail-sense” feminist theory which prioritizes dialogic and complementarist ethos in both the creative and critical literary practice in post-colonial African literature. To celebrate this Nigerian Amazon and Queen of Letters, the Department of English of the University of Lagos is proposing a book of essays mainly based on her impressive oeuvre as well as related interest areas in her honour. Accordingly, contributors may focus on, but are not restricted to the following areas:

- Literary theory/African Literature
- Comparative Literature
- Issues in Feminist
- Gender Studies
- Cultural Studies
- Igbo Metaphysics
- Politics of Sexual/Textual Exegesis
- Politics of Survival
- War Literature

Free Creative Writing Workshop for Young Writers

In a bid to fulfill one of our aims and objectives which is stipulated in the Society’s constitution (organizing literary and creative writing workshops and conferences for the development of our members). The Society of Young Nigerian Writers is organizing a free creative writing workshop for upcoming and aspiring Young Nigerian Writers.

The creative writing workshop, which promises to be an avenue for grooming and enhancing the skills and literary techniques of upcoming and aspiring writers in the country will also allow young and talented Nigerian writers between the ages of 7 and 35 to get their works published as some notable independent publishers will be on the ground to access and collect unpublished manuscripts for publication after the agreement between the publishers and the writers.

 

As there are many talented and upcoming writers in the country who are eager to write and waiting to get their works published; some have never written any works due to their inability and lack of technical know-how. An enabling ground should be created for upcoming and aspiring writers to sharpen and hone their literary skills and creativity which is the gap the society is filling.

Expected Guest lecturers at the workshop include: Dr. Remi Adedokun, former H.O.D, Theatre Arts Department, University of Ibadan who will be talking on – Writing an award winning children drama. Mr. Freeman Okosun, the National President of Biographers’ Collectives will be talking on the Fundamentals of book publishing and marketing and the present Vice-Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Oyo State Chapter, Mr. Akeem Ajibade will be talking on 'Writing, a world acclaimed Children Poetry anthology and short stories'.

Registration is for the workshop is free. Participants will have the opportunity of receiving free workshop materials and certificate of participation. 2012 Zeitgeist ‘Young Minds’ Competition: Call for application

The 2012 edition of the Zeitgeist ‘Young Minds’, a competition to find 10 pioneers, change-makers and leaders of tomorrow aged 18 – 24, across Europe, Middle East and Africa* is now open. The winners will take their place alongside the greatest visionaries of today at Google Zeitgeist 2012 near London on May 20th – 22nd 2012.

From January 25th until March 19th 2012, the search will be on to find 10 exceptional, motivated and inspiring 18-24 year-olds from across EMEA*, who are making a positive impact in the world through science, the arts, education, innovation or inspiration.

The lucky winners will be invited to participate in Google’s annual Zeitgeist event, where previous speakers have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts, Google CEO Larry Pageand Chairman Eric Schmidt. They will also win a brand new Google tech gadget and get the chance to take to the stage and have their voice heard.

Last year saw the first ever ‘Young Minds’ competition in both the UK and America. The lucky finalists won an experience of a lifetime, from meeting Chelsea Clinton and Will I Am, to taking part in panel discussions with Jon Snow and Martha Lane Fox (Co-founder Lastminute.com).
